When I met artist Natalia Zanfardino, we fell into conversation about gender identity/expression, how we perceive ourselves, and the societal pressure to conform to ideals of masculinity and femininity. Is it possible to go beyond the rigid gender binary and see it more as a continuum where we're free to mix or alternate between gender roles? Can we push the boundaries of gender expression and increase gender freedom in our culture? Can we be more supportive of children who exhibit gender-atypical behaviors and preferences? As adult women, have we ever tried to defy gender role stereotypes and norms in our relationships and work environments? Can we transcend traditional ideals of womanhood without being socially punished?
