I have always been intrigued by how people assert themselves and cultivate ways they want to be seen. We all try to be unique while belonging to different subcultures and social groups but who are we underneath the image we project, the persona we’ve built up over time to protect ourselves or be accepted by others? I am inspired by those with limitless creativity, those who embody art, those who push gender boundaries and defy convention. While portrait photography can reveal traits that seem true to the subject, it cannot reveal identity. A magnetic portrait is both a fragment of reality and a complete construct. Our identity is constantly in flux. We are messy organic beings full of contradictions, uncertainties, inner thoughts, and outer projections. Who we are is indefinable and unmeasurable.
